Police officers will be able to access confidential database information from home under a move that has sparked breach-of-privacy fears.

The plan is part of an overhaul of Victoria Police data services, and senior officers deny it will make the force more vulnerable to leaks to criminals.

It is still undecided how access to the information will be gained - through computers or tablets - and how widely the power to do so will be given out.

The move will give officers at home access to the Interpose database, which holds more sensitive information than the ageing LEAP database.
