| Forget the high-pitched scream, 300km/h top speeds and thrilling pit-stops – the formula one car of the future could be powered by electricity.
French car maker Renault has signed on as the technical partner for the Formula E championship, which will put drivers from around the world in identically-powered open-wheel electric race cars.
Renault's move comes as other car makers begin to move away from fully-electric cars in favour plug-in hybrids - cars that are primarily powered by an electric motor but with an internal combustion engine fitted to act as a power generator for the batteries - because of a lack of consumer interest.
Renault has invested heavily in all-electric cars and joining forces with Formula E gives it a global marketing platform to try and convince car buyers of the performance and safety of electric cars.
