| Universities are gathering unprecedented amounts of information about students' online activities and backgrounds, helping to predict those most likely to fail their courses.
Many universities are introducing programs that monitor how long students use internet course materials and libraries, and track students' digital interactions with others.
Students may not like the idea of institutions playing big brother in tracking their every move.
But students are likely to be concerned that information about their personal study habits could wind up in the hands of future employers.
A program being introduced next week at the University of Technology Sydney will create graphs based on the online exchanges students had with the university, said deputy vice-chancellor Shirley Alexander. Advertisement
''Then it provides tailored advice to each student about how they can improve,'' she said.
Students will have sole access to the program. Professor Alexander said she believed UTS was the only university to extend the practice of analysing massive amounts of data to all its departments.
