| Five people have been arrested at the University of Sydney after a group of students allegedly stormed into a chemistry lecture hall and clashed with police.
University staff voted to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday after failing to negotiate a collective agreement with university management.
National Tertiary Education Union branch president Michael Thomson said the union had been negotiating for seven months without the management agreeing to a single clause for a new enterprise agreement.
The union set up pickets at seven entrances to the university campus in Camperdown from 7am and were joined by protesting students. Advertisement
A student, Emily, said up to 80 protesting students forced their way into the lecture and began walking on desks and screaming before about 20 police officers arrived and clashes began.
''We've just had our lecture shut down,'' Emily told Fairfax Radio.
