Unfortunately, Denmark arrests 14 for planning anti-state retribution

Denmark's national security service said Wednesday it has arrested 14 persons, who are connected to extreme left-wing circles, for planning politically-motivated vandalism against the Danish state.

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service, known as the PET, said the 14 were arrested Tuesday night, and were in the process of planning vandalistic acts against public authorities including the Danish police.

"It is the PET's view that those arrested had planned, over the course of last night, to conduct coordinated and politically-motivated vandalism," the PET said in a statement released on its website Wednesday.

The agency said those arrested include seven men and seven women between the ages of 16 and 48 years. They were apprehended in different locations around Copenhagen in raids jointly conducted with Copenhagen Police.

"Investigations into this case have confirmed to us that there continue to be groups with affiliation to extreme left-wing circles in Denmark, who are willing to commit organized vandalism and other forms of politically-motivated criminality," the PET said.

Tuesday night's raids were intended to obstruct or prevent groups or individuals who "seek to reach ideological goals" through criminal acts, the PET said.

However, it did not reveal the intended targets or objectives of those arrested, and did not provide further details of the case. Copenhagen Police will continue to investigate the case with support from the PET, it added.

The 14 will be released later Wednesday, but are all charged with vandalism, the police told Danish public broadcaster DR News.

There have been several arrests of persons linked to Danish extreme left-wing circles in recent years, including when Denmark hosted an international UN-led meeting on climate change in December 2009.
