A NORTH SHORE councillor has played down as ''light-hearted'' remarks she made questioning the existence of Jewish not-for-profit groups.

Cr Elise Keays made the remarks during a Tuesday night meeting of Ku-ring-gai Council. Councillors were debating the cost of its ongoing legal battle over the construction of an eruv, or symbolic Jewish spiritual boundary, around St Ives.

The council last year rejected an application to construct an eruv out of thin wires draped over electricity poles, in a meeting that was sometimes heated.

It has since spent about $200,000 defending that decision in the Land and Environment Court against a challenge and subsequent appeal brought by Northern Eruv Inc. A final judgment is expected to be delivered soon.
