The secretive NSW Crime Commission will be dragged into a new era of openness, with the establishment of an independent body to monitor its workings.

The state government will create the role of inspector of the Crime Commission with powers similar to that of the Independent Commission Against Corruption and be tasked with rooting out ''misconduct and maladministration''.

The commission and its inspector will answer directly to Parliament, as recommended by last year's inquiry by retired Supreme Court justice David Patten.

The inquiry was called after a string of scandals culminating in the jailing last year of Mark Standen, the former assistant director of the Crime Commission, on drug importation charges and revelations the commission had been routinely striking deals with criminals and using the seized proceeds of crime to fund its operations.

The 253-page Patten report found that possibly hundreds of secret financial deals between the commission and Sydney's underworld may have been unlawful.
