An armed robber turned author who was arrested last week amid allegations he was involved in a gun and drug selling racket sustained two black eyes, a broken nose and damaged sinuses when he was arrested by police, a Sydney court heard today.

Bernard Thomas Matthews, 59, served about 18 years in jail over three decades for a series of armed robberies and attempted escapes from jail.

But he also appeared to turn his life around to become a celebrated author and journalist who won several awards for his work and was a regular on the literary festival circuit.

He was arrested last week amid allegations he was selling drugs and guns.

Matthews appeared in Central Local Court today via videolink.

His lawyer, Peter Breen, told the court his client was injured when he was arrested.

"Mr Matthews is sporting two black eyes and damaged sinuses ... as a result of the arrest," Mr Breen said.

Outside court, Mr Breen said Matthews alleged that, although he did not resist arrest, a policeman had pushed him to the ground and jumped on his head, resulting in a broken nose, black eyes and damaged sinuses.
