| MORE than 61,000 people have taken advantage of a state government amnesty to pay about $67 million in unpaid traffic, parking and toll road fines. But authorities are still chasing another $504 million from fine dodgers.
In one case, an eastern suburbs man decided to make amends during the six-week amnesty that ended on July 31, by clearing 186 parking and traffic fines totalling $23,884.
Another man from the Sydney's east paid 62 parking fines worth $7902. A woman opted to pay $80 per fortnight for 161 outstanding parking, speeding and traffic fines totalling $16,769.
The amnesty applied to all state government fines such as traffic, parking, car registration, licence renewals, court orders and those imposed by NSW Police. Advertisement
Authorities waived enforcement, or late, fees in an attempt to lure more people into clearing their debts. The fee for not paying on time is $65.
