Disgusting OZschwitz: Chinese Paramilitaries to relight Olympic torch in Canberra

THE Federal Government has succumbed to Chinese pressure and will let six of Beijing's hand-picked paramilitaries attend to the Olympic torch in Canberra next week. Despite a promise by the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, that Chinese heavies would be mostly confined to a bus, the attendants will have access to the torch at least 64 times on Thursday.

The riot-trained paramilitaries would get off a bus trailing the torch to relight the flame every 250 metres of the 16-kilometre course, the event organiser, Ted Quinlan, said yesterday. They would be present when the torch was handed to a new runner but have no security role, he said. The details contradict Mr Rudd's assurance the men would only get off the bus if the flame went out.

A pro-Tibetan activist, Ian Wilkinson, questioned the refuelling. "You could put a cigarette lighter on and it would last longer than that," he said. "The Government is trying to pacify the Australian public who are against having flame attendants."

The Olympic torch arrived in Bangkok yesterday amid tight security after 320 pro-Tibet activists were arrested in the scaled-back Indian relay leg. In another hitch, the Buddhist temple that was to host the start of the Japanese leg has pulled out over concern about Tibet, a Japanese official said.
