| SOME limped, others wept and two men beat their heads with steel fittings as 120 Afghan men and boys were forced off their vessel yesterday, ending a stand-off with Indonesian authorities.
Rescued by a Singapore tanker as their boat foundered on the high seas, their bid to reach Australia ended in a port in Merak, western Java, amid dramatic and distressing scenes.
One man tried to climb over the side but was held back by officers. Some linked hands and held the railings.
"We don't trust the police," one man shouted from the side of the ship.
The men said they were ethnic Hazaras who faced daily persecution in Afghanistan.
