Conservative political activist Phyllis Schlafly on Thursday had some advice for the students at The Citadel college in South Carolina: stay away from feminists.

While giving a lecture entitled “Conservative Intellectual Tradition in America,” the 87-year-old Schlafly told the all-male audience that “feminist is a bad word and everything they stand for is bad,” according to The Post and Courier. Schlafly also warned against getting into a relationship with a feminist.

“Find out if your girlfriend is a feminist before you get too far into it,” she said. “Some of them are pretty. They don’t all look like Bella Abzug.”

Schlafly is most well known for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have affirmed the equal treatment of men and women. Thanks in part to the work of her organization, The Eagle Forum, the proposed amendment was never ratified by the states.

During her lecture, Schlafly said the proposed amendment would have made women eligible for the draft and opened the door to the legalization of same sex marriages.

“Feminists are having a hard time being elected because they essentially are unlikable,” she said.
