| An Iraqi-born man arrested for people smuggling was himself an asylum seeker who arrived in Australia by boat in 2001, a court has heard.
Ali Zedan, 32, of Wiley Park, faced Central Local Court this morning on one charge of people smuggling. He was granted bail.
Documents tendered to the court said Mr Zedan was part of a people-smuggling syndicate that organised the illegal travel of people from Malaysia and Indonesia to Australia on "suspected illegal entry vessels" (SIEVs).
Mr Zedan, who works as a security guard at the Orient nightclub in The Rocks, became an Australian citizen in 2008.
A statement prepared by the Australian Federal Police said Mr Zedan's two co-accused were Fadhil Raghib Zangana and Wasim Buka, who also arrived in Australia by boat and were subsequently granted citizenship.
