The inquiry into systemic abuse at a state run hostel 30 years ago has named a former politician accused of stopping an investigation into a victim's claim he was abused.

Former child protection officer Brian Humphries last month told the inquiry he was on his way to Katanning to investigate a claim of abuse against St Andrew's Hostel warden Dennis John McKenna when he was told to stop, based on a direction from a politician with the surname Logan.

The inquiry withheld the name until today, when it was revealed the politician was Leslie Logan, who was a minister in the David Brand Liberal government, and died in 2000.

Although Mr Logan retired from politics in 1974, there was evidence he continued to be involved.
