PETROL prices have soared to record levels across the country, posing a big challenge for the Federal Government in its efforts to sell the ability of its FuelWatch scheme to protect motorists from high price rises.

The price of unleaded hit $1.52 in parts of Sydney yesterday, less than 24 hours after the Government announced it would introduce the notification system to give motorists an opportunity to purchase fuel at the best possible price.

The scheme was further undermined by Opposition threats to block legislation in the Senate and the admission by one big retailer that its profits were likely to rise even higher after its introduction.
