| A second-hand goods dealer who bought assorted gold jewellery which he melted and cast into five gold bars was fined $8,000 on Thursday for destroying the purchase receipt.
New Chee Seng alias Lary Liang Zhicheng, 43, pleaded guilty to failing to keep records of gold jewellery bought from Tan Choon Huat on April 23, 2010.
Tan, then 52, is believed to have been involved in the $857,441 armed robbery at Yong Sheng Goldsmith in Bedok Central with two others, one of whom has been sentenced to seven years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane.
The court heard that in October 2009, Tan approached New, owner of 1st Jewellery, at his shop in City Plaza, and enquired if he would buy a large amount of gold from him in cash. New agreed.
