| One of WA's foremost water experts has warned that parts of Perth could be at risk of sinking if the State continues to deplete the city's groundwater resources.
Amid Water Corporation plans to take 162 billion litres from the Gnangara aquifer system, Rob Hammond said Perth was in danger of joining the likes of Mexico City and Bangkok as a city whose groundwater resources were so over-exploited it was subsiding.
Mr Hammond, who was the Department of Water's resource director until earlier this year, said the fallout from such an event would be disastrous as buildings and infrastructure crumbled.
He said suburbs north of the Swan River which sat above the shallowest groundwater sources, including Herdsman and Morley, were the most seriously exposed to the phenomenon, which is known as "differential settlement".
