| Smoking ceremony for ADF parades
MILITARY parades could include welcome-to-country declarations and smoking ceremonies, and army bases would have signs naming the original custodians of the land in a bid by the Defence Force to attract and retain more indigenous Australians.
The Defence Force, which has been struggling to fill quotas because of a tight job market, has proposed a range of measures to boost its indigenous intake, including allowing indigenous soldiers to take leave to attend funerals of non-immediate family members such as distant cousins and setting up indigenous cadet units in remote communities.
The director-general of defence recruiting, Brigadier Simon Gould, said the plan aimed to improve perceptions in the indigenous population about working in the Defence Force. The army has about 700 indigenous soldiers - or 1.4 per cent of the workforce - although some may not identify themselves as indigenous on recruitment forms.
