| Imagine Australia's Reserve Bank Governor charged with bribing politicians for favours and a committee of implicated MPs refusing to appoint the Prime Minister's cleanskin replacement.
Such a crisis of credibility is confronting Indonesia's central bank, president and parliament, with the standoff threatening to leave Bank Indonesia, the guardian of national economic policy, rudderless and undermining President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's anti-corruption campaign.
Amid the debacle, fresh evidence has emerged of continuing Bank Indonesia payoffs to politicians, with a backdrop of billions of dollars in embezzled loans to powerful business figures.
With regulations requiring a new governor receive parliamentary approval by week's end, Dr Yudhoyono has been forced to proffer his respected Economic Minster, Mr Boediono, as a last-ditch choice for the critical role.
