| Pounding heartbeat, dry mouth, trembling hands: if you have a phobia, you know about it.
And you might well have an intense, irrational fear because, according to psychologist Tony Gunn, the author of Fix Your Phobia in 90 Minutes, at least one in 10 Australians does. And undiagnosed phobia cases may push the figure to one in four.
Some phobias can have dire business implications. Take that widely publicised networking killer, "social phobia", which attracts scepticism but is a real psychiatric condition different from shyness, according to a recent US study.
Likewise, “work phobia” apparently amounts to more than a skiver's charter. According to a 2007 German study, work-related phobia is a pervasive anxiety disorder. One in two workers on long-term sick leave shows symptoms of work-related jitters, the study said.
