| NSW is the superbug capital of Australia, according to information released on the federal MyHospitals website.
Nine of the 13 public hospitals that failed to meet national infection benchmarks of no more than 2.5 cases of golden staph blood infections per 10,000 days of patient care were in NSW.
The information was released by the federal Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, yesterday at Bankstown Hospital, and covers the 2010-11 financial year.
Between 25 and 35 per cent of people who get golden staph blood stream infections will die, according to research by Peter Collignon from the Australian National University.
The director of infection control and hospital epidemiology for the Western Sydney local health district, Lyn Gilbert, said stopping infections was like fighting a constant battle.
