| SHE may look like a child's toy, but Millie is a miracle worker. And, according to Australian researchers, robots like her could be the future in treatments for dementia patients.
A study in which robotic seals were given to elderly dementia patients in Queensland has found contact with the robots to be linked to patients becoming less anxious, displaying more happy behaviours and being less likely to wander off.
The study's leader, Wendy Moyle, a professor at Griffith University, said the "Paro" robots were invented by Japanese researchers and could respond to touch, temperature and voices, and learn their names. They use seal robots because seals are unlikely to scare people.
