| IT WAS partly ape, with a tiny brain, long arms, a chimp-size body and ape-like heels. But it was also partly human, with long thumbs, short fingers, an advanced ankle and a brain that looked like it had begun to rewire.
This combination of primitive and modern features has led scientists to conclude that Australopithecus sediba, who lived 2 million years ago, may have given rise to the Homo genus, to which we belong.
Discovery of the remains of this ''transitional'' species, or possible missing link between ape men and the human family, was revealed last year and is hailed as one of the most important finds in human archaeology.
