Rep. Michele Bachmann dominated the Sunday morning shows after the Iowa straw poll, and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty made headlines on ABC’s “This Week” by withdrawing from the Republican presidential race.

But CNN’s “Reliable Sources” helped answer questions about other candidates. It was one of the best shows recently from host Howard Kurtz, who explains media issues in lucid, entertaining terms. And he certainly was giving viewers something different from the other Sunday shows.

Bachmann edged Rep. Ron Paul in the Iowa straw poll, but why wasn’t Paul getting more media attention?

“The media doesn’t believe that Ron Paul has a hoot in hell’s chance of winning the Iowa caucuses, winning the Republican nomination, or winning the presidency. So we’re going to ignore him,” Roger Simon of Politico told Kurtz.

Simon stressed that Paul basically tied Bachmann in the straw poll, a feat that was as good as a win, and thus warranted more media scrutiny.

“So we had a tie for a first,” Simon added. “But where is he on the morning shows this morning? Where are all the stories analyzing what it means that Ron Paul essentially tied for first place at Ames?”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry jumped into the Republican race for president on Saturday, and Kurtz wanted to know how Perry differed from George W. Bush. Kurtz turned to Wayne Slater of The Dallas Morning News for analysis.

“Rick Perry is politically much more shrewd than George W. Bush,” Slater told Kurtz. “He’s actually a very smart guy, but he is not interested in policies like George Bush was. I know that sounds funny to people who think Bush was not interested in policies. Actually, Bush was a smart guy, interested in policy issues. Perry is not.”

Slater described Perry as “wonderfully engaging” and “a wonderful guy,” but added that the Texas governor doesn’t particularly like the media.

“Increasingly, they’ve tried not to make him available as much. He rarely has had news conferences, and when he has, they’ve been fairly short,” Slater said of Perry.

And Slater added, “He has people around him who really have contempt for the media. Not Rick, but some people around him.”
