| Subject: Statists carving up Antarctica Tue Jun 28, 2011 5:07 am | |
| Picture a continent governed by unelected officials from a select group of countries whose decisions are all made behind closed doors.
A continent where new member nations are increasingly joining the group with at least one eye on exploitation, but compliance with basic rules is routinely breached with little recourse.
Colonial Africa in the 19th century? No, Antarctica today.
This week in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the 34th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting is being held. Like all of them, it's a bargaining session between bureaucrats held in private.
Some days after the meeting ends we'll be able see all the documents that went before it, and weeks later the treaty secretariat will release an official record of decisions made — the Final Report.
