| THE former planning minister Tony Kelly tried to gain retrospective funding approval for the $4.25 million purchase of the old Newcastle post office weeks before the state election, after it was bought without cabinet approval by the head of the Land and Property Management Authority, Warwick Watkins.
The revelations, in documents obtained by the Herald, come as Mr Kelly and Mr Watkins are being investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption over the purchase by the former Labor government of another property, Currawong at Pittwater, for $12.2 million.
The purchase of the heritage post office from a property developer, Sean Ngu, was announced in May last year by the then Labor MP for Newcastle, Jodi McKay, who was under pressure to hold her seat.
