CRISTINA Kirchner, the President of Argentina, has accused British Prime Minister David Cameron of ''mediocrity bordering on stupidity'' over the issue of the Falkland Islands.

She then went on to lambast Britain as ''a crude colonial power in decline''.

As tension mounted over the disputed sovereignty of the islands, Mr Cameron told the House of Commons on Wednesday that they should remain British for as long as the inhabitants want to - ''full stop, end of story''.

His comments provoked a backlash in Argentina, where Mrs Kirchner has until the end of this week to confirm that she will run for a second term when the presidential election takes place in October.

Despite her refusal to announce her candidacy thus far, it is almost universally assumed that she will run - with her populist policies on issues such as the Falklands seen as key to maintaining her high approval ratings.

''In the 21st century, [Britain] continues to be a crude colonial power in decline, because colonialism is out-of-date as well as unjust,'' she said.

Mrs Kirchner added that Mr Cameron's comments, in response to a question from Andrew Rosindell, a Tory MP, showed ''mediocrity bordering on stupidity''. Although she has frequently criticised Britain over the Falklands while in office, and once referred to the Royal Navy as ''pirates'', her latest outburst was an unusually strong attack on another world leader.

Earlier last week, Admiral Sir John ''Sandy'' Woodward, the head of the naval task force in the Falklands conflict, warned that Britain could now do ''precisely nothing'' to stop Argentina retaking the islands due to defence cuts. In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, he also said America was pushing for negotiations over sovereignty and could no longer be relied upon to support Britain's case.

Tensions over the islands have been stoked by British companies drilling for oil in the waters around the Falklands, which British forces reclaimed after the Argentine invasion of 1982.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry described Mr Cameron's words as a ''regrettable act of arrogance''.
