| A NEWCASTLE nightclub twice refused a liquor licence on the grounds of a likely negative social impact used a legal loophole to open on Saturday night and plans to serve alcohol until 3am over Easter.
The new Minister for Hospitality, George Souris, ordered an immediate review of the state's catering laws which the operators of the Kensington nightspot in Hunter Street used on Saturday to open as a ''special events venue'' selling $10 tickets to anyone who wanted entry.
By employing a caterer with a licence to serve alcohol, the Kensington's owner, Wadalba Properties, has sidestepped objections from police and health authorities and the requirement for community impact statements for licensed premises, a move Mr Souris said was an abuse of liquor laws.
