President Dmitry Medvedev has harshly criticised the quality of Russian-made planes, saying he's had first-hand experience of their problems.

Medvedev told a meeting of the presidential Security Council focusing on aviation the latest Russian aircraft have even been dogged by issues.

"Even the new planes produced by our manufacturers have certain problems, which I recently have experienced myself," Medvedev said without elaborating on Friday.

Russian news agencies reported on Friday a presidential Tupolev Tu-214 had repeatedly suffered problems with its landing gear and was eventually found unfit for service and sent back to the manufacturer.
