| Transnational organized crime spans five continents, cycling drugs, people, and counterfeit goods in an estimated $2 trillion industry.

The comments are priceless:

Pretty vague, may have well just drew it in crayons and scribbled CRIME HAPPEN HERE samagon
I thought La Cosa Nostra was a pizza company? Davmaster
yay Canada has no organized crime! G094389
Wow, and ther is not organized migrant smuggling into the United States. Whew, I was hearing rumors about that. LongWayFromOz
Woohoo… Australia, crime free since since being established as a convict colony! z05m
@DavMaster http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2010/11/11/nicolo-rizzuto-killed.html
Montreal is the Mafia hub of Canada dumky
One thing I find interesting about these estimates is that out of 120 billion dollars, only 12 billion dollars are related to what libertarians consider aggression. Most of the rest is comprised of drugs, and immigration.
Without drug prohibition, organized crime would loose 100 billion dollars in revenue, based on the above chart. With open borders, it would loose 7 billion dollars from smuggling immigrants. matthewpearce83
How can you compile a chart like this, and not include the “Hells Angels” ?
They are after all, one of very few groups who operate on a global level.
Grrr.

New Zealand must be off the Map! z05m
@mathewperce83
The Hell’s Angel’s are organized crime cell’s run by the Mafia. deadkennedy
As others have recognized, very shallow and unprofessional. Seems like something for “pre-Eclipse” age. I see Wired hasn’t notched up its reporting quality in over three years since I canceled my subscription.
I know for sure for example that counterfeit goods are coming into Europe through Turkey as well as by containers into ports directly. This map assumes all counterfeit goods are from China and going only into Europe. Wow :) No fake Barca t-shirts in US and South America :) :):)
Avoid this and Wired in general. If you want info pick up some decent papers. This seems it was done during the lunch break. deadkennedy
No female trafficking into US. Hmm, I’d swear to god I read there was something like that. Or maybe it was GTA4. AmicableNinja
Actually, a good majority of the weapons the Mexican cartels use are Russian. capananda
I would give organized crime a second to the Club of the Isles who regulates everything from oil, gas, pharmaceuticals,money exchanges, grains and livestock. And who is Club of the Isles? Search it. There is a reason Americans are knighted by the queen of England, our sworn enemy in 1776. Digitalaficionado
Admittedly not seeing migrants into the US from Mexico was a huge ommission…thought provoking none the less Reow
You missed the fact that most of Asia are trying to smuggle themselves into Australia. It’s criminal, and it’s frighteningly well organised. yOy
Wired, you should be ashamed of yourselves for posting this. No real story or facts provided. And glaring holes in established. The US has no heroine, counterfeit goods or migrant smuggling? Im sure ICE, DEA, et al Homeland Security, and every state in the union would disagree with that passionately. “Female trafficking” is patently offensive since males are also trafficked as well (albeit on a smaller number but nice just glossing over their suffering). Whats worse is at least 20% of the data appears out-of-date. So really what was the point of this article? Proof of form over substance? News flash, it failed. Coda
Cool. Would it be possible to get a large, printable version? It’d look great on my cube wall. minstrelmike
Full legalization of all drugs would evaporate a lot of the money used for operating costs. I wonder how many conservative politicians are actually funded by criminals who like the laws, kind of like the way the California pot growers banded against legalization, choosing short-term profits over long-term business objectives. Zombowski
@ Davmaster – plenty of crime, Canadians just aren’t that organized. Bluestorm
I think this blog lays it out pretty clearly what we would expect from infoporn/graphics: http://otterzen.blogspot.com/2011/02/zen-693-is-organised-crime-worlds.html jakeefer
In regards to item #1 the firearms traffic into mexico…. can we please stop with the horribly inaccurate reporting? It’s been proven over and over that the 90% figure is corrupted math. biggaaron12
so Mr. T now lives in the Middle East..
im assuming he is the only major initiator of gold smuggling Anonymous
Why is our cocaine going to Wyoming? Dammit!
