| USING inside information in sports betting, including player injuries and team tactics, is cheating and might become an offence attracting up to 10 years' jail, under a proposal by the NSW Law Reform Commission.
Laws governing gambling and betting on sports and other events are complex and inconsistent within NSW and between the states, with penalties ranging from fines to 21 years in prison, a consultation paper issued yesterday says. It favours a national approach.
The paper has been issued while police continue to investigate alleged illegal betting on an NRL match between the Bulldogs and Cowboys last year, which led to the rearrest of John Elias this week for an alleged breach of bail conditions.
The proposal to make the use of inside information a criminal offence was most likely ''to cause a bit of angst'', the commission's chairman, the former judge James Wood, QC, said.
