| FEDERAL backbench MPs would have their salaries increased from $136,640 to more than $180,000 in return for cashing out perks such as overseas study trips under a pay overhaul being considered by the government.
The Special Minister of State, Gary Gray, released the long-awaited Belcher report on parliamentary remuneration yesterday which describes the existing system as ''an extraordinarily complex plethora of entitlements containing myriad ambiguities''.
The report recommends that two existing entitlements - a $32,000-a-year electorate allowance and a first-class, round-the-world airfare every three years for study travel - should be replaced by equivalent salary increases.
It also says MPs should have the choice of taking cash instead of a taxpayer-funded car and recommends curtailing the lifetime gold pass for free domestic air travel after MPs leave Parliament.
