| THE president of Clubs Australia, Peter Newell, will launch a broadside attack on ''nanny state'' poker machine reforms today, warning of club closures and job losses if the scheme proceeds.
The National Press Club address, before a dinner tonight in Canberra with 62 federal MPs, including four ministers, is part of a ''big brother'' scare campaign against the deal Labor struck with the independent MP Andrew Wilkie to form government.
Leaders of the Uniting, Catholic, Baptist and Anglican churches and the Salvation Army met in Canberra yesterday to oppose the clubs and to urge action on gambling reform.
Mr Newell will criticise Mr Wilkie in the speech as having ''received far fewer votes than many clubs have members'', and calls for the government to honour its election pledge to the clubs.
