| THE federal government is trying to broker a deal to salvage at least some of the $500 million in revenue already included in the budget from proposed excise payments on alternative fuels such as LPG and ethanol.
As revealed in the Herald last week, the Coalition has indicated it will oppose legislation to phase in excise on the fuels, even though taxing them was suggested by the Howard government.
The Coalition argues the excise would be yet another tax rise to hit household budgets and would contradict the government's aim of reducing carbon emissions because ethanol and LPG are cleaner fuels than petrol.
The independent MPs Andrew Wilkie and Tony Windsor have also said they are worried about the impact of the tax on LPG, prompting the Assistant Treasurer, Bill Shorten, to suggest compromises rather than face defeat of the excise legislation, which must be be introduced into Parliament by Thursday.
