OZschwitz: Complaints to extortionist ATO double

COMPLAINTS to the Tax Office have nearly doubled in two years and the agency is failing to meet its own standards for handling them.

The ''traffic light'' system the tax office uses to grade its performance has been red in recent years, as the number of complaints approaches 50,000 this financial year, according to official figures. This compares to 40,665 and 27,942 in the previous two financial years.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman, Allan Asher, has also received a record number of complaints and said his office spends 20 per cent of its time dealing with the Tax Office - far outstripping any of the 150 agencies it represents, including immigration detention centres and Centrelink.
