| Subject: China's slave pen: Young monk set himself on fire in protest and died Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:27 am | |
| A Tibetan Buddhist monastery in south-western China has been sealed off by police after a young monk set himself on fire in protest and died.
It was the first time that a monk protesting against China had killed himself through self-immolation, according to historians of modern Tibet.
Rights groups say the death, which fell on the third anniversary of anti-government unrest in the area, sparked demonstrations near the Kirti Monastery that were broken up by police.
The self-immolation appeared to reflect the sense of desperation and futility that simmers among Tibetans who chafe at rule by China, which invaded central Tibet in 1951. The monk, Phuntsog, 20, belonged to the Kirti Monastery in Sichuan Province. The monastery has been a centre of protest against Chinese policies and was especially active in the 2008 Tibetan uprising.
