Hard on the heels of the serial candidate Pauline Hanson, the Sydney private dick Frank Monte has also nominated for the Legislative Council. Monte, 65, pictured, stood unsuccessfully for Liberal preselection in the 1970s and believed it was never too late to make a contribution. ''Ronald Reagan got into it late,'' he said. He wants to abolish bike lanes, legalise marijuana, advocates more parking space for cars and equal rights for gays and lesbians under family law. Monte's attempt at a political career comes nine years after a court found that he defamed the Versace family in his autobiography, The Spying Game. The hefty costs almost crippled him financially.

A former police officer, Monte worked closely with the Fraser, Howard and Greiner Liberal governments. To impress NSW voters he has published a list of people he has met and negotiated with in a professional capacity. They include: Tony Curtis, Donald Trump, Candace Bushnell, Jon Voight, Robert Kennedy jnr, Dewi Sukarno, Anthony Haden-Guest, RuPaul, Gregory Peck, Lainie Kazan, Leslie Ann Down, Ted Danson and Diane Keaton. For ephemera freaks he is also selling ''Elect Frank Monte'' stickers for $4.50 each. Meanwhile, the online bookmaker tomwaterhouse.com is offering $1.33 for a Hanson loss and $3 for a win.
