| Subject: More from that OZschwitz slave pen: Mandatory parental locks on televisions Tue Mar 08, 2011 1:29 am | |
| All new digital TV gear sold in Australia must let parents block TV shows according to their rating.
As I said recently, some of Australia's free-to-air networks are finally providing accurate Electronic Program Guide data - so we know exactly when shows will start and finish (at least in theory). This change of heart is due to pressure from the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
It's not that ACMA staff are fed up with missing the end of their favourite shows, it's that the industry watch dog has made it mandatory for new televisions to feature a parental lock. Such features let parents lock down their televisions according to the content rating, for example blocking anything rated higher than G unless a PIN is entered. The Parental lock will not block programs that are not subject to classification, such as news, current affairs and sports programs.
