| THE Reserve Bank of Australia company Securency International fired several foreign agents suspected of being involved in bribery and rehired them through a mysterious shelf company in an Indian Ocean tax haven.
Securency, which makes polymer banknotes and sells them to about 30 countries, terminated agreements with agents it used to win banknote supply contracts in Nigeria, Chile and Guatemala only to rehire them as subagents through a Seychelles Islands company, SPT Ltd.
SPT is a shelf company linked to a cabal of South African businessmen and Securency's former Africa business manager, Peter Chapman. Fairfax Media has seen documents showing that SPT is contracted as an agent of Securency.
Fairfax Media recently revealed that SPT received more than $7 million in commission payments from Securency last year, four months after the Australian Federal Police began investigating it for alleged bribery of foreign officials in May 2009.
