| Colorado state Sen. Suzanne Williams, D-Aurora, was involved in a fatal crash in Texas on Sunday after she veered into oncoming traffic, Texas authorities said.
The crash killed 30-year-old Brianna Michelle Gomez, who was seven months pregnant, according to the Texas Highway Patrol. The baby boy was delivered at Northwest Texas Healthcare Hospital in Amarillo and is listed in critical condition.
Williams, who was treated and released for her injuries, told 9News she doesn't remember much about the crash.
"It's a tragedy that I now have a personal experience with a highway accident," she said over the phone from Texas. "It's been very traumatic."
The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday near Dalhart, Texas, when Williams' 2010 Honda CRV hit a 2003 GMC Yukon driven by Eric Gomez of Amarillo, according to the Highway Patrol.
Texas troopers said Williams' SUV veered into the southbound lanes and she attempted to swerve back before the collision.
Williams' son, 41-year-old Todd Edward Williams, and two grandchildren, 7-year-old Tyler Williams and 3-year-old Tristan Williams, all of Texas, were injured, according to the state patrol. None of the three passengers was wearing seatbelts and both Todd and Tyler Williams were ejected.
The Aurora Sentinel reported that Williams' husband, Ed, said he drove from Denver to Texas to be with the family.
"She's doing all right, but our son isn't," he told the Sentinel. "Our two grandkids are out of the hospital now."
Eric Gomez and two children in the Yukon, one 6 years old and one 4 years old, were treated and released.
Suzanne Williams, 65, has served six years in the legislature, including two years as Senate Majority Caucus chairwoman. She sponsored a bill during the last legislative session that would toughen Colorado's seatbelt laws.
