A CENTRAL figure in the Australian Wheat Board's Iraqi kickbacks affair has been appointed ambassador to Burma by Kevin Rudd - the very man who rose to prominence by publicly prosecuting the case.

Mr Rudd, now the Foreign Affairs Minister, was Labor's chief critic of the Howard government's conduct during the 2005-06 AWB scandal, but yesterday announced that the diplomat Bronte Moules was Australia's new ambassador to Burma.

Ms Moules was a senior member of Australia's delegation to the United Nations in the early 2000s.

That was the same period that AWB was accused of paying kickbacks disguised as trucking fees to the regime of Saddam Hussein in return for wheat contracts.
