IT IS the ultimate sales pitch. Venture into space, travel three times the speed of sound, see the sky change from blue to mauve to black as the atmosphere is left behind, feel the 90-second roar of rockets, then drift weightlessly into silence – and be one of the first people to do it in history.

There are at least 10 accredited agents in Australia selling the dream on behalf of the space tourism company Virgin Galactic, and its product could be just 18 months away. Spencer Travel, in Sydney, was the first to sell a fully paid ticket in Australia in 2007.

The Australian woman paid $US200,000 in full to secure such a position, which will be drawn by lottery. Only six passengers will travel at a time, and Ms Killeen said all of the 100 first passengers will travel well within the first year of flights.
