| Nightclub owners and publicans are mounting an 11th-hour campaign to try to stifle changes in the city's planning laws that could cut back their trading hours.
But their campaign, which was stepped up yesterday, seems doomed to failure after a council report prepared for a committee meeting on Monday recommended support for changes it says will help curb alcohol-related violence. It dismisses industry concerns they could ''shut down'' the city at midnight.
Councillors are expected to endorse amendments to the Late Night Trading Development Control Plan, under which ''reviewable conditions'' would be imposed on new pubs and clubs and existing ones upgrading their premises. These would allow the council to cut back their trading hours if it decided the premises were irresponsibly managed. Advertisement: Story continues below
Yesterday industry figures circulated last-minute emails urging patrons to attend the meeting and protest at the changes.
