Police will get extra powers to shut down illegal brothels and prostitution will be banned from residential areas under laws being proposed by the state government.

There will also be longer jail terms for brothel owners employing children and larger fines if children are found there.

Attorney-General Christian Porter told Parliament that while there was "no utopian solution" to the prostitution issue, the government recognised it was a "generally undesirable industry" and needed to be brought under state government control.

The Department of Racing, Gaming, and Liquor would operate the licensing system.
