A PROMINENT Philippine politician convicted of having sex with a child was sent back to jail after the prisons chief was sacked for allegedly releasing him two years early.

Police flew former House of Representatives member Romeo Jalosjos back to Manila aboard a chartered plane a day after a lower court threw out his attempt to challenge the legal basis of his arrest.

The 67-year-old had his two life terms commuted to 16 years in prison last year by his political ally President Gloria Arroyo.

He was jailed for life in 1996 after being convicted of having sex with an 11-year-old girl, which is considered statutory rape.

The politician caused a countrywide uproar when he walked out of the national prison compound in southern Manila last month under unexplained circumstances, shortly after the Justice Department rejected a parole board recommendation for his early release.

Bureau of Corrections chief Ricardo Dapat was sacked after Jalosjos was recaptured in the southern city of Dapitan.

The Justice Department said Jalosjos was not eligible for parole before 2010 and ordered his immediate return to jail.
