OZschwitz gulag: Release plan for families with children in concentration camps

FAMILIES with children who are seeking asylum in Australia will be released from detention facilities to live in the community under a yet-to-be announced plan by Labor.

Immigration Minster Chris Bowen is reportedly on the cusp of announcing a strategy that will allow families and unaccompanied children to live in the community while their claims are processed. The plan was all but confirmed yesterday by Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

There are hundreds of asylum seekers in detention who qualify for the plan but only those who ASIO deems are not a risk would be eligible for release.

Groups approached by the government canvassing support for the plan included welfare organisations and churches. This had reportedly begun before the election.

Mr Bowen did not respond to the report yesterday and other Labor figures ducked the issue.

Senator Hanson-Young said the details of the plan were in keeping with discussions she had held with Mr Bowen during the week and they supported the Greens agenda of removing children from detention facilities.

''We are obviously waiting for the government to respond to [the report] but it is very much in line with what we have been calling for,'' she said. ''The details align with the conversations we have had as well as those discussed with the various stakeholders and groups who have a vested interest in seeing children removed from detention.''

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said it was Labor's ''failed border protection policies'' that had led to more than 700 children being held in detention in Australia.
