| KRISTINA KENEALLY has locked horns with Julia Gillard by demanding a special deal for union members working on the Barangaroo development and deciding to torpedo one of the Prime Minister's signature first-term policy reforms - a national set of uniform workplace safety laws.
Despite agreeing with every other state and territory to a uniform set of occupational health and safety laws, NSW is set to infuriate Ms Gillard by threatening to renege if union- friendly changes are not granted. Advertisement: Story continues below
And in a further sop to the union movement just five months from the election, the Premier is also set to declare Easter Sunday a public holiday in NSW so workers on that day will have to be paid extra penalty rates. Retail workers, for example, would have to be paid double time and a half compared with the usual Sunday rate of time and a half. Presently, public holiday rates apply to Good Friday, the Saturday and Easter Monday.
