| THE billionaire founder of the construction giant Multiplex was willing to pay kickbacks to the construction union to avoid industrial action that was hurting the profitability of his company, a court has heard.
The NSW Supreme Court heard yesterday that John ''Fatty'' Roberts, who died in 2006 of advanced diabetes, told his former financial controller Ian Widdup that he wanted to avoid problems with the union.
Mr Widdup has sworn a witness statement recounting a conversation he had with Mr Roberts in the 1980s. Advertisement: Story continues below
Following strikes, Mr Roberts is alleged to have told Mr Widdup: ''I don't want trouble with the union … this must never happen again. From now on if the union wants something we are going to have to give it to them.''
