All in all, they are superior to, their inferior opposite sex...

Competition is a byproduct of free trade, it's responsible for ever better products and services, delivered by competing entities...

Whilst the aggressive ones strive harder, give up less easily, are psychologically tougher, all of which translates into better results in the end.

Competition is (by definition) about beating your competitors, which includes dragging them down just as much as improving your own game.

Aggressive... ok.

Beating them yes, but 'you're not dragging them down.'

They did it all by themselves.

One is only responsible for one's own actions and not the actions of another.

Or, to put it another way:

In say a short sprint race at the Olympics, the winner beat the others...

But he most certainly didn't slow them down himself... they are responsible for their own performance or lack thereof...

Women - the painful truth

It's one of the more puzzling observations in medicine: the vast majority of chronic pain patients are women. Women suffer disproportionately from irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headaches (especially migraines), pain caused by damage to the nervous system, osteoarthritis, jaw problems such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and much more. Women also report more acute pain than men after the same common surgeries.

In the lab, when researchers ask male and female volunteers to subject themselves to experimental pain - increasingly hot stimulation on the inner arm, immersion of the hand in very cold water, electrical jolts to the skin - women show lower pain thresholds (that is, they report pain at lower levels of stimulus intensity) and lower tolerance (they can't bear intense pain as long).

Women are also better able to detect small gradations in pain stimuli and respond differently to certain opioid - painkilling - drugs. (It's not clear if men and women differ in sensitivity to cancer pain.)

Gender and feminism, a guilt trip

Tell me it's not throw-up material, this sudden parade of glamorous career women arguing across the front pages about the best way to birth, suckle and rear their young. Next it'll be the diaper diaries, and we'll all be expected to hang impatiently on the cloth v disposables dialectic, parsing the contents like ancient seers. Anyone would think today's thirtysomethings were the first ever to achieve parturition.

But there is something interesting about these Mummy Wars, all the same. It's this. The root from which they so vigorously sprout is the cleft stick in which feminism has got itself thoroughly, perhaps irreparably, wedged.

Insecurity is the soil. You don't hear men angsting in public over whether they're even halfway decent fathers. If paternal guilt exists, they're all very grown up about it. Yet we're supposed to believe that these traits are learnt, not innate. Learnt from whom? Well, from teachers (oops, mostly female). Mothers (even oopser). OK, from big, bad, paternalistic society.
