A public meeting with federal independent MP Rob Oakeshott has been postponed after security threats.

A number of threatening calls were made to the offices of the Fairfax newspaper Port Macquarie News and the Port Macquarie Panthers club.

Janine Buesnel, the general manager of Port Macquarie News, which organised the eventfor tomorrow night, said it had "become apparent that there are some people who plan to use the night as a chance to vent their rage at Mr Oakeshott".

"The majority of interested voters would have participated in this example of living democracy and we apologise to them. However, we couldn't take the chance a minority could have put others at risk."
